An oven that stays cold, takes forever to heat or burns one side of the tray usually has one failed part. Here is how to narrow it down.
Simple checks first
- Clock and timer: many built-in ovens will not heat until the clock is set after a power cut, or if a timer or "end" time is active.
- Child lock: check for a key or lock symbol on the display.
- Function selector: make sure you selected a heating function, not just the light or defrost fan.
- Power: check the oven isolator switch and the breaker.
Electric oven not heating
Each heating function uses different elements. If fan cooking does not work but the grill does, the fan element (the ring behind the back panel) has probably failed. If the top grill does not glow red, the grill element has failed. A failed element sometimes shows a visible break or blister. Other causes include a faulty thermostat, a temperature probe, the selector switch or the control board.
Cooking unevenly
- A failed fan element or fan motor (the fan should spin in fan modes)
- A worn door seal letting heat escape
- A thermostat or sensor reading wrongly
- Trays too large, blocking airflow
Gas oven not lighting
Gas ovens use an igniter and a thermocouple or flame-failure device. If you hear clicking but no flame, the igniter or burner may be dirty or faulty. If the flame lights but goes out, the thermocouple is the usual suspect. If you smell gas, turn off the supply, open windows, and do not use switches.
Microwave not heating
When a microwave runs and the plate turns but food stays cold, the magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor has usually failed. These parts hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged. Please do not open a microwave yourself.
