Fridge Not Cooling but Freezer Works? Here Is Why

If your freezer is still freezing but the fridge section is warm, the problem is almost never the compressor. In a frost-free (no-frost) fridge, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge through a small channel. When that airflow stops, the fridge warms up while the freezer stays cold.

1. A defrost fault (the most common cause)

Frost-free fridges melt frost off the freezer coil several times a day using a defrost heater, a sensor and a timer or control board. If any of these fail, ice slowly builds up until it blocks the coil and the air channel. Look at the back panel inside the freezer: a thick layer of frost or ice there confirms it.

Temporary fix: empty the fridge into a cool box, unplug it and leave the doors open for 24 hours with towels on the floor to fully defrost. If cooling returns and then fails again after a few days, the defrost part needs replacing.

2. Evaporator fan not working

The freezer fan pushes cold air into the fridge. Open the freezer door and press the door switch: you should hear or feel the fan. If it is silent, noisy or blocked by ice, the fan motor or the ice is the problem.

3. Blocked air vents

Overpacked shelves or a bag pressed against the vent between the freezer and the fridge can stop airflow. Rearrange food so the vents are clear.

4. Damper or air control fault

Many fridges have a damper that opens and closes to control how much cold air enters the fridge. If it is stuck closed, the fridge stays warm.

5. Thermostat or sensor problem

A faulty fridge temperature sensor or control board can stop the fan or damper from working, even if everything else is fine.

Quick checks you can do

  • Make sure the temperature dial is not set too warm.
  • Check the door seals close tightly all round.
  • Leave space around the fridge and clean dust from the condenser coils.
  • Keep the fridge out of direct sun and away from the oven.

Why this happens more in the UAE

High kitchen temperatures and frequent door opening in busy households mean more frost forms, so defrost systems work harder. Fridges kept in hot store rooms or garages are also more likely to fail.

Our technicians carry defrost heaters, sensors and fan motors for most brands. See our fridge repair service or WhatsApp us your fridge brand and model.
