A dryer that leaves clothes damp wastes time and electricity. In most cases the root cause is airflow: lint blocks the path for hot, moist air, the dryer overheats, and a safety fuse or the heater fails.
1. Clean the lint filter, properly
Empty the lint filter after every load. Once a month, wash it in warm soapy water: fabric softener leaves an invisible film that blocks air even when the filter looks clean.
2. Clean the condenser (condenser dryers)
Condenser dryers have a removable condenser unit behind a panel at the bottom front. Rinse it under running water until the fins are clear. A blocked condenser is the main reason condenser dryers take two or three cycles.
3. Check the vent hose (vented dryers)
The hose at the back must not be crushed, kinked or longer than necessary. Disconnect it and clear any lint inside.
4. Empty the water container
On condenser and heat-pump dryers, a full water container stops the cycle or prevents heating.
5. Choose the right programme
Synthetic or delicate programmes use lower heat. Very small or very large loads also dry poorly because the moisture sensor misreads them.
Faults a technician will check
- Thermal fuse: a one-time safety fuse that blows when the dryer overheats.
- Heating element: burns out over time, especially with poor airflow.
- Thermostats and sensors: control temperature and cycle length.
- Heat-pump system: on heat-pump dryers, the fan, filters or sealed system.
- Drive belt and rollers: if the drum is not turning, clothes will not dry.
Fire-safety warning signs
Stop using the dryer and unplug it if you notice a burning smell, the outside of the cabinet is very hot, or clothes come out unusually hot. Never leave a dryer running when you go out or go to sleep.
